Take these out before treatment
- People and pets, including fish tanks and other animals (ask about large tanks)
- Plants
- Aerosol cans, propane and anything pressurized
- Flammables like lighter fluid, fuel and solvents
- Candles, crayons, lipstick and anything made of wax
- Medications and vitamins
- Chocolate and food that can melt
- Vinyl records, film and heat-sensitive photos or artwork
- Musical instruments
- Firearms and ammunition
Leave these in place
- Furniture, mattresses, box springs and bed frames
- Most clothing, bedding and linens
- Books and most everyday household items
- Your checklist will note anything specific to your home
Anything you take with you
Items that leave the home on treatment day could carry bed bugs. Run clothing and fabric items through the dryer on high heat for at least 30 minutes, then seal them in a clean bag until you return.
Avoid these common mistakes
- Don't move things into other rooms, a car or a friend's place. That spreads bed bugs.
- Don't spray store-bought insecticides or set off bug bombs. They can scatter bed bugs into walls and neighbouring rooms.
- Don't throw out your mattress or furniture. Heat treats them in place.
- Do clear clutter off the floors so heat and air can move freely.
