What to look for
- Itchy bites, often in a line or cluster. Not everyone reacts, so no bites doesn't mean no bed bugs.
- Tiny dark spots on mattress seams, sheets or the bed frame
- Small rusty or reddish stains on sheets or pillowcases
- Shed skins that look like empty, pale bed bug shells
- Tiny white eggs, about 1 mm long, in seams and cracks
- Live bugs: flat, reddish-brown and about the size of an apple seed
Where to check
- Mattress seams, piping and tags
- Box spring and bed frame joints
- Behind the headboard
- Couch and chair seams and cushions
- Along baseboards and carpet edges near the bed
- Behind picture frames and in nightstand drawers
How bed bugs get in
Bed bugs don't come from a dirty home. They hitchhike in luggage after travel, in used furniture and mattresses, and through shared walls and hallways in apartments and condos.
What not to do
- Don't start sleeping on the couch. Bed bugs follow you and spread.
- Don't throw out your mattress or drag furniture through the building.
- Don't use bug bombs or foggers. They don't reach where bed bugs hide and can scatter them.
